莎士比亞讀書時就卓爾不凡，與衆不同。傳說他年輕時在鄉村當過教師。也有傳言說他曾在一個叫托馬斯·露西的富裕財主兼地方行政長官的土地上偷獵，結果被露西的管家發現，他爲此捱了揍。莎士比亞出於報復，就寫了一首譏諷大財主的打油詩。這首詩沒過多久便傳遍了整個鄉村。大財主無論走到哪裏，總有人用這首打油詩來嘲笑他。托馬斯鄉紳非常惱火，於是準備想辦法懲罰莎士比亞，莎士比亞因此被迫離開斯特拉福德小鎮，到倫敦避難。
